Methylprednisolone therapy in multiple sclerosis: a profile of adverse effects.
A retrospective analysis of 350 treatment courses using high dose pulsed intravenous methylprednisolone for relapses of multiple sclerosis revealed a low number of adverse effects. This study confirms that high dose methylprednisolone is a safe therapeutic option in multiple sclerosis.
متن کاملIntravenous methylprednisolone for multiple sclerosis in relapse.
A randomised comparison is made between methylprednisolone, 1 g intravenously daily for 7 days, and a standard ACTH regime for the treatment of multiple sclerosis in acute relapse. It is found that methylprednisolone produces a more rapid clinical improvement than ACTH but confers no longer term benefit when the two treatments are compared at 3 months. It is proposed that intravenous methylpred...
متن کاملHigh-dose methylprednisolone therapy in multiple sclerosis induces apoptosis in peripheral blood leukocytes.
BACKGROUND Apoptosis is supposed to contribute to the elimination of T cells from the inflamed central nervous system in the natural disease course of multiple sclerosis (MS). In the animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, T-cell apoptosis can be induced by high-dose glucocorticoid (GC) administration. OBJECTIVE To study the effects of intravenous high-dose GC therapy in MS on...
متن کاملRecurrent High-Dose Intravenous Methylprednisolone Succinate Pulse Therapy-Induced Hepatopathy in a Patient with Multiple Sclerosis
Objective: We describe recurrent and reversible hepatopathy in a girl with multiple sclerosis (MS) after glucocorticoid pulse therapy, to point out the possibility that glucocorticoid may harm the liver. Clinical Presentation and Intervention: An 11-year-old girl with MS, who was treated with high-dose methylprednisolone succinate pulse therapy, developed elevation of liver enzymes. The episode...
